How is an Intragastric Balloon Different from Other Treatments?
An intragastric balloon is a non-surgical alternative to many popular bariatric procedures, such as the gastric bypass or duodenal switch surgery. This alleviates the need for incisions or extensive recoveries. Because the balloon is eventually removed, the procedure is also reversible.
Which Brand Does LIMARP Use?
At LIMARP, we strive to use only the highest quality tools and materials. As such, we offer the ORBERA® intragastric balloon which has been proven effective for more than two decades.
How Does This Treatment Aid Weight Loss?
A saline-filled balloon is placed into the stomach through the esophagus. By taking up space in the stomach, the balloon can help you feel fuller faster, reducing the amount of food you need to eat. Over time, this process will help you lose weight. However, although this balloon can help you lose a significant amount of weight at the start, you will need to be dedicated to a healthy diet and exercise to maintain your results.
What is the Average Weight Loss with Intragastric Balloons?
According to a recent study, average weight loss after six months has been about 11 percent of the patients' total body weight. After about one year, patients have been able to maintain about 70 percent of their initial weight loss results.
Are There BMI Restrictions?
The intragastric balloon is recommended for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 to 40. During your consultation, Dr. Pompa will perform a comprehensive evaluation to determine whether you are a good candidate for this treatment.
The intragastric balloon is not meant to stay in place permanently.
How Long Will the Intragastric Balloon Remain in My Stomach?
Unlike other surgical options, the intragastric balloon is not meant to stay in place permanently. The balloon is designed to remain in the stomach for up to 6 months. If it stays for any longer, you may be more vulnerable to long-term health risks such as bowel obstruction.
Are There Side Effects?
As with most procedures, you should anticipate some side effects after the balloon is placed. However, they are rare. Most commonly, you may experience minor side effects for a few days such as:
- Abdominal cramping
For about 90 percent of patients, these side effects will resolve on their own within two weeks. Serious side effects during the procedure are usually avoided by skillful techniques and timely removal.
