REALIZE® Band for Safe Weight Loss

Like the LAP-BAND®, the REALIZE® band is a gastric band placed around the stomach to restrict the amount of food you eat. The two procedures differ primarily in adjustability: with REALIZE, your doctor can make more minute adjustments to more finely regulate the constriction of your stomach. Patients can also track their weight loss progress with an accompanying online tool.

Dr. Liza María Pompa González at LIMARP can perform a safe REALIZE placement procedure at our Tijuana, MX, practice that facilitates your weight loss goals.

A Closer Look at REALIZE

Like other gastric band systems, the REALIZE system reduces the capacity of the stomach with the surgical placement of an adjustable silicone band around the upper part of the stomach. Because their consequently smaller stomach allows patients to feel satisfied with smaller food portions, they can lose a significant amount of weight

REALIZE differs from LAP-BAND mainly in its adjustment settings. REALIZE has a specialized tool that eases the placement of a fill port and eliminates the need for sutures. Adjustments to the band delivered through the port, which fills a soft balloon inside the band with saline. The more saline that is added to the tube, the tighter the constriction of the stomach. Over time, patients can add or detract saline according to their lifestyle and weight loss objectives, or have the band removed altogether.

Candidates for REALIZE

REALIZE is most often recommended to adults between 18 to 60. This procedure is best suited to people with a BMI of 40 or more. If you are at a BMI of at least 30 and also suffer from weight-related health conditions such as hypertension or diabetes. However, heart disease, certain autoimmune and digestive conditions, and other systemic health problems may preclude you from receiving a REALIZE band. The only way to accurately evaluate your candidacy is by meeting with a qualified bariatric surgeon.

Placing a REALIZE Band

Receiving a REALIZE band requires laparoscopic surgery, but is much shorter than other bariatric procedures and has a much lower risk of complications. To begin, your surgeon will make a few small incisions along your abdomen. The surgical instruments and laparoscopes, or small cameras at the end of tubes, are threaded through these incisions. The laparoscope will take images of your stomach that are fed to a monitor, which your surgeon will rely on as she places the REALIZE tube around the upper portion of your stomach. Your surgeon will also place the fill portal to the abdominal wall, under the skin, through which future adjustments to the band can be made.
