LAP-BAND: An Adjustable Weight Loss Device

The LAP-BAND® system is designed to temporarily reduce your stomach’s capacity to hold food so you can feel fuller faster and longer. LIMARP® also offers the REALIZE® Band system, which offers greater adjustability and an online after-care program that can track your progress. Dr. Liza María Pompa González at our Tijuana, MX, practice can help determine which of these bariatric procedures can best help you achieve weight loss.

What is the LAP-BAND?

The LAP-BAND system is placed in a restrictive surgery that physically constricts the stomach with an adjustable band. When your stomach is smaller, it is filled faster and your hunger is satisfied sooner and for longer.

While a number of restrictive procedures change the shape of the stomach, the LAP-BAND is unique in that it does not do so permanently. Doctors modify the stomach’s storage capacity by adjusting the amount of saline or silicone in a tube that is fitted around the stomach. The band ring is attached to a thin tube that connects to an external access port. The fuller the tube, the greater the constriction and the sooner hunger is satisfied. This flexibility allows patients to adjust their results over time. Additionally, the band is easily removed so that treatment reversible.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Adults between the ages of 18 and 60 who have a BMI of at least 40 can qualify for a LAP-BAND. If you suffer from weight-related health conditions like high blood pressure or sleep apnea, you can qualify at 30 BMI or above.

However, certain systemic health problems may not respond well to a LAP-BAND procedure. If you have heart disease, lung disease, autoimmune diseases that affect connective tissue, or digestive problems like Crohn's disease, bariatric surgery may not be appropriate.

How Is LAP-BAND Surgery Performed?

LAP-BAND is a minimally-invasive procedure performed laparoscopically to minimize discomfort and surgical scars. Thin tubes connected to cameras or laparoscopes are inserted through small incisions in your abdomen. The video is projected onto a monitor, through which your surgeon can see the stomach as she places the LAP-BAND tube. The band is then filled with silicone or saline to narrow the upper portion of the stomach.

The LAP-BAND Advantage

A gastric band system offers patients a number of attractive benefits, such as:

  • Reduced risk: Compared to other bariatric surgeries which permanently redirect or remove a portion of the digestive tract, the temporary effects of LAP-BAND surgery have a much lower risk of complications.

  • Shorter procedure: Because of its relative simplicity, a LAP-BAND procedure is usually completed in under an hour.

  • Dramatic weight loss: LAP-BAND patients often lose as much as 50 percent of their weight in the first year after treatment, if they keep up the post-surgical diet.

  • Improved health: The weight loss following gastric band procedures can also relieve weight-related conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea.

  • Reversible effects: In contrast to most bariatric procedures, the effects of a LAP-BAND surgery are reversible. Patients can have the device removed if they decide they no longer want or need it.

However, it is important to understand that successfully losing and keeping off weight after surgery is only possible by committing to diet and exercise as part of a lifestyle change.
