After Your Surgery

After gastric banding, your diet will need to change in many ways. For the first few weeks after surgery, you should only consume liquid or pureed foods, followed by gradually adding soft foods. Before you are released from the hospital, our in-house nutritionist will provide you with a list of instructions on how to achieve a smooth recovery, including a list of foods to avoid.

Once you have returned to eating solid foods, you will need to be aware that a banded stomach can only hold about one cup of chewed food, as opposed to the four cups a non-banded stomach can hold. This means you will feel full very quickly after you start eating. It also means you need to eat healthy, nourishing foods, and not waste your meals on foods that do not provide vital nutrients and minerals. As you start to lose weight in the first three to six months after your surgery, you may experience some side effects as your body adjusts, such as fatigue, mood changes, or dry skin. These effects will eventually subside and should not be cause for concern.
