One of our most popular and successful procedures for treating obesity at our Tijuana, Mexico clinic is gastric band surgery. An adjustable gastric band can help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight by limiting the amount of food you can eat at one time. Under the care and guidance of Dr. Liza María Pompa González, you can achieve a healthy weight and an improved quality of life.

Gastric Band Surgery

Adjustable gastric banding is a safe and effective way to limit your caloric intake in order to achieve weight loss. The procedure has helped hundreds of thousands of weight loss patients start a new phase of health in their lives. Treatment is ongoing, and you and Dr. Pompa González can monitor your progress and adjust the band as needed.

We offer the LAP-BAND® and REALIZE® band. The REALIZE band offers greater adjustability. During a consultation, we will help you determine which option is the best fit for your needs.

Benefits of Gastric Banding

Gastric band surgery requires a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure that involves few risks when performed by an experienced surgeon. It involves a relatively short hospital stay, less post-surgical pain, and faster recovery time. Because it does not permanently alter any tissue, it is totally reversible. Furthermore, the band will not interfere with your digestion or change the way you absorb foods; it simply changes the amount of food you can consume in one sitting.

Dr. Liza Maria Pompa González performs the lap band procedure at LIMARP International Center of Excellence for Obesity in Tijuana, MX. Also known as adjustable gastric band surgery, this procedure is a relatively fast, less invasive option for bariatric treatment. As a result, it is often recommended as a starter surgery for patients with a higher BMI who cannot initially undergo a more involved procedure.

Treatment is ongoing, and you and Dr. Pompa González can monitor your progress and adjust the band as needed.

Gastric banding also gives you more gradual weight loss than gastric bypass surgery, which allows you to adjust your routines and lifestyle as you lose weight. The band adjustments can be easily performed in a clinical setting to help you stay on track with your weight loss goals. Since obesity is linked with conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea, you can enjoy better overall health and longevity as a result of gastric banding surgery.

After Your Surgery

After gastric banding, your diet will need to change in many ways. For the first few weeks after surgery, you should only consume liquid or pureed foods, followed by gradually adding soft foods. Before you are released from the hospital, our in-house nutritionist will provide you with a list of instructions on how to achieve a smooth recovery, including a list of foods to avoid.

Once you have returned to eating solid foods, you will need to be aware that a banded stomach can only hold about one cup of chewed food, as opposed to the four cups a non-banded stomach can hold. This means you will feel full very quickly after you start eating. It also means you need to eat healthy, nourishing foods, and not waste your meals on foods that do not provide vital nutrients and minerals. At LIMARP®, we provide meal planning and nutritional information to all our gastric band patients, so you will have close guidance in selecting the right foods.

As you start to lose weight in the first three to six months after your surgery, you may experience some side effects as your body adjusts, such as fatigue, mood changes, or dry skin. These effects will eventually subside and should not be cause for concern.
