Who can be a candidate for revisional bariatric surgery?

What are the benefits of revisional bariatric surgery?
Revisional bariatric surgery can correct problems and eliminate complications you may have experienced with your first bariatric surgery. Correcting these issues can increase your comfort as well as your chances for successful weight loss.
In many cases, the first surgery patients received at other hospitals was not the most ideal option for their unique situation, and therefore did not produce the desired weight loss results. We also treat many patients who underwent bariatric surgery during the procedure’s early evolutionary stages and wish to achieve better results with the modified techniques and advanced technology available today.
Patients who seek revisional bariatric surgery at LIMARP® can be assured that they will receive the appropriate surgery for their individual situation, thus increasing their chances of achieving their desired weight loss.
Who can be a candidate for revisional bariatric surgery?
Patients who have previously undergone bariatric surgery and experienced unsatisfactory results may be candidates for a revisional surgery. A patient may seek revisional surgery for a variety of reasons, including failure to reach their goal weight or lose at least half of their excess weight, an inability to tolerate certain foods, other surgery-related complications, or because they regained the weight that was lost following their first procedure.
If this is your case, Dr. Pompa can recommend a revisional surgery to eliminate complications you may have experienced and to help improve your odds of successful weight loss.
The team at LIMARP offers revisional bariatric surgery in Tijuana, Mexico, to correct failed weight loss surgery. Unfortunately, poor technique or insufficient follow-up can undermine the success of a surgery and sometimes lead to regained weight. Dr. Pompa will work with a patient to figure out the best solution.
What is the approval process for revisional bariatric surgery?
Our approval process for revisional bariatric surgery candidates is similar to that for first-time patients. You will have an initial appointment with Dr. Pompa and her multidisciplinary team to ensure you are physically and mentally ready for surgery. Our team will review your medical and surgical history and may request records and imaging studies from your first bariatric surgery, as well as perform specialized studies to determine how we can improve or need be, correct your previous surgery.
Once revisional surgery is determined to be feasible, Dr. Pompa will discuss your options with you based on your first procedure, your current physical and mental health, and your current and previous weight. After this, she will choose the surgical option that will offer you the best chance of achieving and maintaining your weight loss.
What procedures are available for revisional bariatric surgery?
There are numerous revisional bariatric surgeries available, and the correct one depends on the type of previous procedure you have undergone. Patients with gastric banding may be candidates for gastric band removal and revision to a gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery.
Patients who have undergone gastric plication may undergo revisional gastric sleeve surgery, if feasible, or gastric bypass. A gastric sleeve procedure can be revised to a gastric bypass or duodenal switch. Laparoscopic procedures are used whenever possible, but this depends on the previous procedure, adhesions or scarring within the abdomen, and the complications the patient may present with the first surgery.
