How does the Allurion program work?
The Allurion program is a non-surgical treatment that allows patients to lose weight in up to 16 weeks using an ingestible intragastric balloon; this means that this procedure does not require an endoscopy or anesthesia, as is the case with a traditional intragastric balloon. The idea of swallowing the balloon may be surprising to some, but studies[1] have found that, while there are concerns about intestinal obstruction, the balloon is “a safe device that offers effective weight loss.”
This non-surgical procedure has also been used in patients with metabolic syndrome (MS) who are also obese to test its effectiveness. As we discussed, an endoscopy is not required for placement and removal, and the body evacuates it through the digestive tract after four months. The results were surprising, with a total weight loss of 11.6%, as well as a significant decrease in MS-related comorbidities[2].
These results are possible because the Allurion balloon limits the amount of food your stomach can hold and keeps you satisfied to prevent unnecessary eating.
What are the certifications provided by Allurion?
As the first bariatric clinic in Tijuana that offers Allurion to patients, we want to ensure that our medical team is always up to date in order to provide the top-quality services that characterizes LIMARP® as one of the best clinics on both sides of the border. Dr. Liza María Pompa González trained with experts in Allurion to earn the necessary certifications and in July of 2022, she completed the courses needed to be proficient in all aspects of the placement by completing a minimum of 10 proctored placements including 2 with stylet assistance and hereby authorized to independently use the Allurion Gastric Balloon System.
In the same month, she was also trained in the compulsory Allurion clinical training videos and the hands-on training session, and LIMARP®, as a clinic, has met all criteria required for certification to perform Allurion Gastric Balloon System placements. All of these certifications have been validated by Ram Chuttani MD, Allurion’s Chief Medical Officer. We pride ourselves in always being up to date with all medical innovations pertaining to all bariatric procedures and our team works hard to be able to provide all services in a safe and successful way, as well as to address any doubts or questions that may arise.
What side effects can be expected with the Allurion program and how are they managed?
Side effects after having the Allurion balloon placed, are not as common as you might believe. However, some may present mild symptoms such as bloating, cramping, acid reflux, nausea, dizziness, slight weakness, or dehydration. These effects can occur as the stomach adjusts to the presence of the balloon or, in some cases, as a reaction from the body to this foreign object.
That said, this is not always the case. Approximately 80–90% of our patients report no side effects, and when symptoms do occur, they typically last only 5–7 days after placement.
We will remain in constant contact with you after the procedure to provide follow-up care, just as we do with all our patients. If any symptoms arise, we will guide you on the best steps to reduce them, whether through over-the-counter medication, IV hydration, or other supportive measures. Rest assured, we will be with you every step of the way.
How much weight loss is expected with the Allurion Program?
The balloon is designed to help patients lose around 10–15% of their body weight during the entire process. In some cases, patients may lose even more when they combine the treatment with regular physical activity, closely follow our medical guidance, and adhere to the personalized diet provided by our nutritionist. We have seen this happen, so we can confidently say it is possible.
It is important to remember that every weight loss procedure is a tool to help you achieve your goals and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Beyond the expected weight loss, the main purpose of this program is to help you develop healthy habits and maintain them long term. We provide you with all the tools and support necessary to make this possible.
