Our approval process for revision bariatric surgery is similar for patients undergoing their first surgery. You will have an initial consultation and evaluation with Dr. Pompa González and her highly experienced multidisciplinary team to ensure that you are physically and mentally prepared for surgery. We will review your medical and surgical history and may request any reports or imaging studies from your previous bariatric procedure, we will also do specific tests to determine how we can improve on your previous surgery.
Once we determine if revision surgery is an option, Dr. Pompa González can discuss your surgery options with you based on your first procedure, state of physical and mental health, and your current and previous weight. Together you will choose the surgery option that offers the greatest possibilitites for successful, lasting weight loss.
Available Revision Bariatric Surgery Procedures
There are numerous bariatric surgeries available, the correct one will depend on the previous procedure you had done. Patients whose first surgery was a gastric band procedure may be candidates for removal of the band and revision gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery.
Patients who had a gastric plication may have the procedure revised with a gastric sleeve, if viable, or gastric bypass. A gastric sleeve procedure can be revised with a gastric bypass or duodenal switch. Laparoscopic procedures will be performed whenever possible, but is dependent on your previous procedure, scar tissue that may have developed within the abdomen and the type of complications you are experiencing at the time of revision.
