Liposuction is a safe and effective cosmetic surgery that can help eliminate stubborn fat in targeted areas, such as the arms, hips, thighs, and abdomen that have not responded to diet, exercise, and bariatric surgery. The best candidates for this procedure include patients who are within 25 to 30 pounds of their weight loss goal. Performed by Dr. Marco Rodas at our state-of-the-art bariatric center in Tijuana, Mexico, this procedure can reduce excess fat, smooth selective areas, and sculpt your body to achieve your cosmetic goals.

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to contour the body. The treatment uses a cannula to carefully remove fat deposits. Up to about 10 pounds of fat can be removed during treatment.

Benefits of Liposuction

Liposuction may be recommended for a range of candidates but it can be especially helpful as a final step in certain patients' weight loss journeys. Although it should not be used to shed pounds, liposuction can encourage patients to find the confidence to shift into a healthier lifestyle. Finally achieving the figure you desire can drastically improve your self-confidence and your quality of life.

What Areas of the Body Can Receive Liposuction?

Liposuction can be performed on many areas of the body but is most commonly used to treat:

  • Flanks
  • Abdomen
  • Upper arms
  • Buttocks
  • Hips
  • Inner thighs

Based on your goals, Dr. Rodas can help you determine whether liposuction is the best solution for your needs.

Are You a Candidate for Liposuction?

If you are considering liposuction, there are certain factors that may affect your candidacy, including:

  • Goals and expectations
  • Current weight
  • Skin elasticity
  • Plans to become pregnant in the future
  • Health conditions such as diabetes

Additionally, if you have recently undergone weight loss surgery, it is recommended that you first undergo the necessary body contouring procedures, such as an arm lift or thigh lift, to remove excess skin before liposuction. In some cases, liposuction can be performed at the same time. Together, these treatments can dramatically enhance your appearance and help you achieve the toned, healthy figure you desire.

Planning Your Liposuction Treatment

During an initial consultation, Dr. Rodas will carefully discuss the areas you wish to target and the results you hope to achieve with plastic surgery. He will also take time to explain the procedure in detail, answering any questions or concerns you may have. He will also provide you with a list of pre-surgical and post-surgical instructions to follow which can ensure you achieve a good outcome.

Preparing for Your Procedure

To minimize your risk of complications, you should quit taking medications such as aspirin that may impact your body's ability to heal properly. Additionally, you will need to arrange a ride home from your appointment with a friend or loved one as you will not be able to safely drive.

What to Expect during Liposuction

Your treatment will be performed at our advanced surgical facility. On the day of the procedure, the area will be numbed with a local anesthetic and you may be given general anesthesia, designed to completely relax you and place you in a deep sleep. Once you are comfortable, tiny incisions will be made (no larger than half of an inch) and a small tube known as a cannula will be inserted into each incision. Dr. Rodas will move the cannula back and forth underneath the skin to break apart fat deposits and remove the excess tissue from the deep underlying layers.

Once the fat cells have been successfully removed and desired results achieved, Dr. Rodas will carefully close the incisions with small sutures and apply the necessary bandaging. You will then be moved into one of our comfortable recovery rooms until released to go home. The overall length of the procedure varies from patient to patient, depending on the complexity of the surgery and how many areas are being treated. However, these procedures generally average about one hour per treatment area.

The Recovery Period

You may experience some soreness, bruising, and swelling for the first few days after surgery. It is essential that you follow your post-surgical instructions to help minimize discomfort and maintain a smooth recovery. These tips may include:

  • Getting adequate rest
  • Light walking to help prevent blood clots
  • Taking pain medication and antibiotics
  • Avoiding soaking in water such as bathtubs and jacuzzis
  • Remaining hydrated

You will also be required to wear a specialized compression garment for several weeks after the procedure to facilitate proper contouring. In most cases, patients can expect to resume limited daily activity within the first week, and all other physical activity at the three-week mark. If you are undergoing multiple liposuction procedures, you should schedule them a minimum of several weeks apart to minimize your risk of complications.

Signs of Complications

Liposuction, like any other type of plastic surgery, does carry some degree of risk. Infection and numbness at the site, for example, can occur. Although the risk of complications is low, patients should watch out for:

  • Chest or leg pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fever
  • Severe pain and swelling

If you experience any of these warning signs, it is essential that you seek medical attention immediately.

Liposuction Results

Although some effects are immediately visible, as the swelling subsides, your results will continue to reveal themselves. Be patient with your body as it heals. Within four to six months, you will be able to enjoy your beautifully sculpted body. During liposuction, the fat cells are completely removed. As such, you can typically expect long-term results after your liposuction procedure. Dr. Rodas will help you set realistic expectations based on your personal health and lifestyle factors.

Maintaining Your Figure

In order to maintain your results, it is essential that you are dedicated to a healthy diet and exercise routine. This includes limiting calories, eating a nutritious diet with plenty of on whole foods, and developing fitness habits that help prevent weight gain. Weight fluctuation can negatively impact the results you have achieved.
