The Pros and Cons of Silicone Implants
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved silicone gel-filled breast implants for women who are 22 years or older. When used for breast reconstruction procedures, these implants can be used for women of all ages. Additionally, silicone implants are often used in revision surgeries that improve or correct results of an original procedure.
Silicone breast implants offer an array of benefits:
- Resistant to aging
- Provide a very natural look, even on women with little natural breast tissue
- Have a texture that closely mimic natural breasts
Silicone gel breast implants were first presented to the public in 1962. During the 1980s and through the present day, their popularity has soared. However, like any procedure, there are certain risk factors. Some of the disadvantages that accompany silicone breast implants include:
- Larger incisions for placement
- Limited areas of incision placement options
- Rupture or leakage made be more difficult to detect
The Pros and Cons of Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants are approved for breast augmentation by the FDA for women who are aged 18 or older, as well as any age for the purpose of breast reconstruction. Like silicone, saline implants are used in corrective surgeries to address aesthetic and health concerns.
Saline implants are a popular choice today, and offer many advantages. For example:
- They contain sterile saltwater solution, the fluid that makes up most of the human body
- Saline implants only require small incisions for insertion
- They offer a firmer feel, which some women prefer
- Because saline implants are filled once inside the breast pocket, the volume is flexible
The first saline implants were introduced in 1964. There are drawbacks to saline breast implants which include:
- Higher risk of leakage
- During leakage, the implant may deflate
- May be more prone to shifting
- Less natural appearance and texture
- Possibility of rippling
Breast Implant Placement Options
Your breast implants can be inserted either above or below your breast muscle. Regardless of placement, both offer advantages in terms of recovery, aesthetics, and mammogram efficacy.
Subglandular implants are placed between the breast tissue and the pectoral muscle. One advantage to subglandular implementation is a shorter recovery time. Many patients also report a more lifted appearance.
However, because the implant is placed closer to the surface of the skin, it may be more visible and have a less natural appearance. This circumstance is usually remedied with the use of silicone implants, which offer patients a more natural feel and look compared to saline.
Submuscular implants are inserted beneath the pectoral muscle. One advantage of this method is that the breast tissue serves as a support for the implant. A drawback of this procedure is recovery time. Healing from your breast implant procedure may take a bit longer compared to subglandular method, and may also be a bit more uncomfortable.
At LIMARP, we will discuss both saline and silicone breast implants with you, providing you with the information you need to make the best decision. We also use state-of-the-art technology and techniques for initial procedures. Furthermore, should you need a corrective or additional procedure, we can provide that as well. With over a decade of experience, we also offer general anesthesia during breast augmentation procedures to help with comfort and relaxation.
What to Expect
Breast implants are placed during a fairly routine procedure. After our anesthesiologist has administered the necessary medication, Dr. Rodas will make the incision in the area you chose during your consult, and will carefully insert your implant. He will ensure that it sits properly and can help you achieve the look you desire. Once the implant is placed and correctly positioned, he will suture your incisions closed.
Recovery from breast augmentation surgery typically require about two weeks of down time. You must be diligent about cleaning your incisions and changing your bandages to prevent infection. You will also be given a supportive surgical bra to wear during recovery. You may experience bruising, swelling, soreness, or numbness, but these are temporary side effects and should subside within a few weeks. You should avoid any strenuous activities for several weeks following your surgery.
Risks and Benefits of Breast Implants
Implants typically only last about ten years. After that, they will need to be replaced. Additionally, implants may rupture and deflate, requiring that patients who receive them undergo regular screenings to ensure their implants are intact.
Many patients decide that the benefits outweigh any negative aspects when it comes to undergoing a breast augmentation. Breast implants can restore and enhance your natural curves, create symmetry, and improve the shape and size of your breasts. Breast augmentation can also be combined with a lift for even more dramatic results.
