A prospective gastric sleeve surgery patient learning about the procedureFor those who are struggling with obesity and who have been unable to lose substantial amounts of weight through diet and exercise, gastric sleeve surgery offers the potential to start a new, healthy chapter in their lives. At LIMARP®, Dr. Liza María Pompa González and her team of bariatric surgery professionals perform gastric sleeve surgery according to the highest standards, helping severely overweight patients to start down the road toward massive weight loss by reducing the size of their stomachs and thereby limiting their appetites. Although it is one of the newer forms of bariatric surgery, it has already shown exceptional promise as a powerful and highly beneficial tool in the fight against morbid obesity.

Still, gastric sleeve surgery is not suitable for every patient, even though he or she may fit the BMI profile. Dr. González carefully evaluates candidates for gastric sleeve surgery at her Tijuana, MX bariatric surgery center, serving San Diego, CA and surrounding areas, to ensure that they can safely undergo the surgery and will likely enjoy its full range of benefits before approving them to move forward. If she feels that gastric sleeve surgery is not the best option in a given patient’s case, she will discuss alternative procedures that are more suitable.

Are you a good candidate for gastric sleeve surgery? The only way to know for certain is to meet with Dr. Liza María Pompa González for a one-on-one, confidential consultation at her bariatric surgery center. Contact LIMARP® to schedule your consultation with Dr. González today.

Determining Candidacy for Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Gastric sleeve surgery is a major surgical procedure during which the majority of a patient’s stomach is removed. Although it is shorter and simpler than many other forms of bariatric surgery, such as gastric bypass surgery, it does carry a certain amount of risk. Dr. González makes sure that patients are fully aware of these risks during their initial consultations. For most patients, the potential benefits of the procedure outweigh the risks; however, suitable candidates for the procedure will understand that even the safest surgical procedures present risks and side effects.

Suitable candidates for gastric sleeve surgery must also:

  • Not smoke: Smoking interferes with post-surgical healing and increases the risk of complications during and after surgery. If you currently smoke, you will have to stop weeks before undergoing surgery in order to be considered a good candidate and be willing not to start again - ever.
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher: Exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis. For example, people who have a BMI of 35 or higher with comorbid conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or sleep apnea may be considered good candidates.
  • Be willing to commit to healthy lifestyles after surgery: Gastric sleeve surgery is not the solution to obesity; it is the beginning of a journey toward a healthier life. It will help to reduce the appetite, not to mention the capacity to hold food in the stomach. However, patients must be willing to commit to healthy diets, exercise, and generally positive living after their surgery.
  • Be willing to postpone becoming pregnancy for at least 18 months after surgery: In order to ensure a safe pregnancy, women should wait for at least 18 months after gastric sleeve surgery before attempting to conceive.
